[09-02-23] Fatal Auto vs. Pedestrian Accident Thursday in Parking Lot of Colorado Springs King Soopers

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) — Police said that speeding and alcohol were not factors in the death of a man who died after being struck by, and pinned under, a car in a busy shopping center parking lot on the city’s north side.

According to the Colorado Springs Police Department, the accident happened near the King Soopers at the intersection of Academy Boulevard and Woodmen Road, just before 8 a.m. Thursday.

Police said that the car came into the parking lot off Academy, and that the unidentified victim was hit as he walked from the store and into the parking lot.

It’s unclear who is at fault; police are trying to find witnesses who may have seen the incident and are asked them contact the Colorado Springs Police Department at 719-444-7000.

“Not sure if they were in a crosswalk, etc.,” said Lt. Jason Reeser, of the Major Crash Team. “We’re still investigating that at this time. The investigation is ongoing. We’re just now pulling up cameras from the neighboring businesses.

The city has had seven such deaths so far this year, one fewer than all of last year.

It’s an example of why drivers — and pedestrians, in particular — can learn an important lesson from this,” Reeser explained. “It doesn’t matter if you’re on the roadways or in a parking lot. Pay attention to the people around you. Pedestrians, unfortunately, in our society, we’re often distracted if we’re looking at cellphones, etc. You may see the pedestrian and they may not see you, or vice versa.”

Police spent nearly four hours at the scene and left around noon; the store remained open during the investigation.

COLORADO PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT STATISTICS

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, pedestrian deaths from traffic crashes in the United States are at a 30-year high. And while Colorado is not among the Top 10 or even Top 20 states for the most pedestrian/motor vehicle accidents in the country, it still has its fair share of serious injuries and fatalities as a result of a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian. Colorado ranked #33 in 2019 (latest data available).

Between January 1 and April 18, 2022, Denver alone has seen ninety-three (93) auto/pedestrian accidents resulting in serious bodily injuries. And sadly, during this time period, an additional fifteen (15) people lost their lives when struck by a vehicle while walking in Denver. Last year there were ninety-one pedestrian fatalities in Colorado: more than 13% of all Colorado roadway fatalities.

In 2020, motor-vehicle crashes with pedestrian fatalities were the second leading cause of preventable deaths in the United States. Pedestrians are the most vulnerable roadway users. Visibility sharply declines in the evenings and at night, so it is no surprise that most pedestrian/vehicle collisions happen in the evening or during low-light conditions.

With numbers like these, the chances of you or a loved one being a victim of a pedestrian/vehicle collision are high. All car accidents have the potential to result in serious injuries, but none more so than a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian. Without any protection to the body, even the smallest impact from a vehicle can cause significant, even life-changing injuries, or even death. If you or a loved one has been a victim of a pedestrian/vehicle collision, you should seek legal advice to understand your rights to recover the compensation you deserve.
