[02-13-24] Colorado Springs Single Mom Injured in Hit-And-Run Crash, Asks for Help Finding Suspect

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – Karissa Russell, a single mother in Colorado Springs, is one of the latest victims of a hit-and-run crash in the city.

Russell tells 11 News that she was going straight on South Academy Blvd. and another woman was turning left on North Academy from Platte. Russell says she doesn’t know what happened, but the suspect’s car completely hit Russell’s and she started to spin, totaling her car.

Russell says the next thing she remembers is hearing, “Are you okay? Are you okay?” then suddenly seeing a tow truck arrive and being escorted into an ambulance. The person responsible for the hit-and-run fled the scene. Russell suffered a concussion, a fractured C7 vertebrae in her neck, bruises on her left knee and right hip, as well as cuts on her face.

CSPD says hit and runs have been on a steady rise… until this past year. In 2022, there were a reported 2,249 hit-and-runs, with 573 of those cases being solved. That’s compared to 2023, where there were 2,075 hit-and-runs, with only 508 of these cases being solved, this is a 174 hit-and-run decrease from 2022 to 2023. CSPD says it’s very challenging trying to solve these hit-and-runs because of the lack of evidence an officer has to work with

CSPD is asking for the community’s help in solving hit-and-runs by taking a picture or a video–when it’s safe to do so–of the suspect’s car or license plate, anything police can use to find and identify the vehicle that fled the scene.
