[10-25-25] Two Seriously Injured in Crash, Platte Reopens After Hours-Long Closure

UPDATE: THURSDAY 10/23/2025 10:08 p.m.

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Platte Avenue has reopened after a nearly four-hour closure following a head-on crash on Thursday.

According to CSPD, officers originally responded just before 6 p.m. after multiple 911 calls reported a head-on crash in the area of Platte Avenue and Wooten Road. When officers arrived, they discovered that the two cars, a truck heading west and a sedan heading east, had collided head-on in the westbound lanes of Platte.

CSPD did not specify how the eastbound sedan ended up in the westbound lanes of Platte.

According to police, the driver of the sedan was unconscious when officers arrived and was taken to the hospital. The driver of the truck was also taken to the hospital, and both reportedly suffered serious injuries. Both directions of Platte were closed for several hours for the crash investigation.

Platte fully reopened around 10 p.m. Thursday.

UPDATE: THURSDAY 10/23/2025 6:40 p.m.

Platte shut down in both directions due to crash

CSFD said two people have been rescued from the crash and taken to the hospital. Their conditions were not immediately available.

Drivers are still asked to avoid the area of the crash as crews continue to work.

THURSDAY 10/23/2025 6:30 p.m.

Platte Avenue is shut down in both directions west of Powers Boulevard due to a crash.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) posted about the crash shortly before 6:15 p.m. and said crews were working to free people from the wreckage and that all eastbound lanes are closed at Wooten Road.

The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) also posted about the crash and said westbound lanes are closed at Space Center Drive due to the same crash. Traffic is being diverted at Space Center and Wooten, and Platte is heavily congested.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area.

COLORADO SPRINGS TRUCK ACCIDENT STATISTICS

Large truck crashes can cause severe injuries because of the size and weight differences between commercial trucks and passenger vehicles. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 5,340 people died in crashes involving large trucks nationwide in 2024. Passenger vehicle occupants accounted for 62% of those deaths, while 17% were large truck occupants and 19% were pedestrians, bicyclists, or motorcyclists.

Large trucks also require more distance to stop than passenger vehicles. IIHS reports that loaded tractor-trailers can need 20% to 40% more stopping distance than cars, especially on wet or slippery roads.

Colorado Springs has designated truck routes that carry commercial traffic through the city, including portions of I-25, US 24, Powers Boulevard, Academy Boulevard, and other major corridors. The city’s truck route system is designed to direct through truck traffic onto designated roads while limiting unnecessary commercial traffic on neighborhood streets.

I-25 is especially important for commercial traffic in the Colorado Springs area. The Colorado Department of Transportation describes I-25 as the backbone of commercial freight movement in Colorado and part of a major north-south freight corridor.

Common factors that can contribute to serious truck accidents include:

  • Speeding or driving too fast for conditions
  • Driver fatigue
  • Distracted driving
  • Unsafe lane changes
  • Following too closely
  • Improperly maintained brakes or tires
  • Overloaded or improperly secured cargo
  • Inadequate driver training
  • Impaired driving
  • Failure to account for weather or road conditions

Truck accident cases can involve more than one responsible party. Depending on the circumstances, liability may involve the truck driver, trucking company, vehicle owner, maintenance provider, cargo company, or another business connected to the truck’s operation.

Common injuries in serious truck crashes can include traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, fractures, burns, amputations, internal injuries, scarring, disfigurement, and paralysis.

COLORADO SPRINGS TRUCK ACCIDENT FACTS

Colorado Springs has specific rules governing commercial truck routes and oversized vehicles. The city limits where through trucks may travel and directs commercial vehicles toward designated truck routes and truck-route zones.

US 24 is also an important freight route in the region. CDOT has identified the corridor east of Colorado Springs as a critical freight connection between I-70, Colorado Springs, and southern Colorado.

These local conditions can make truck accident investigations more complicated than ordinary passenger vehicle crashes. Important evidence may include electronic logging data, driver qualification records, maintenance records, cargo information, inspection reports, and records from the trucking company.
